Language

 

Beginning with Sim File Maid 2.0, nearly all user-interface text is abstracted into a simplified version of my "Language Pack" model. Essentially, there is a folder called langs/ where you install Sim File Maid. In this folder is at least two files named README.lang.0eng.txt and lang.eng0.txt. PLEASE NOTE: When sending me language packs, please Zip the file(s). "Special" ASCII characters tend to get munged my mail servers/readers when included in text attachements. So what might look "right" to you, looks like a vertical bar to me.

lang.*

The way Sim File Maid learns a language, is by someone translating a bunch of text to a given language. That translation is put in its own file in the langs/ folder. So if you did a French translation, you might call your file lang.fr.txt or lang.de.txt for German, or lang.plat.txt for Pig Latin. The .txt is not required, just the starting lang. is required. I use the .txt so I can double-click on a file and have it open in Notepad. You could call it lang.longislandslang for all I care. Although if you submit your language pack to me (and please do) I reserve the right to rename/edit your pack.

Format

A language pack begins with two lines of "header" information. The first line is the formal name for the language- This is how users will see the language in their language options. Eg. "English (US)" or "East Bornean", etc. The second line is your chance to be famous. This is where you can put your name and e-mail address (or just name, or pseudonym, or company, or whatever). This "author" line is displayed for all to see when they view the "credits" (regardless of the language pack they are using) and gives you +25 to Karma.

Following those two lines, leading and trailing whitespace are ignored. Any line starting with a sharp (#) or a single quote (') is considered a comment and that line will be ignored. Blank lines are also ignored (or lines of whitespace).

Data lines are of the format "name = value" line shown below:

FILEEXISTS = File ... exists, overwrite it?

When translated, the "name" (FILEEXISTS in this example) MUST remain intact (case does not matter). Please note the elipses (...): Elipses are used when I need to shoehorn some data into a sentence. In this example the path and name of the file that exists replaced the elipses. YOU MUST PRESERVE THE ELIPSES, and preferably place them appropriately within the statement.

If you don't translate a given data line it will be displayed in English.

README.lang.*

These are translations of the README file. The filename must match the filename of the corresponding language pack with README. prepended to it (case insensitive). Because of the dependency on the language pack, if you haven't translated the language pack yet then create one and just give it the required 2 lines for the header. If different people translate README and language packs, both/all will get credit.

 

Sim File Maid is not supported or endorsed by Maxis or Electronic Arts. Although if they'd like to use/improve/distribute/support/endorse it, I'd be happy to work with them on such an endeavour. But I'm not begging or anything. Really. Just sayin'.
